This session will overview the critical issues raised by Big Oil’s funding of climate change-related research in elite universities, including questions of greenwashing, conflicts of interest, academic freedom, the intersection of research and policy, and universities’ credibility within climate conversations.

This session will overview the critical issues raised by Big Oil’s funding of climate change-related research in elite universities, including questions of greenwashing, conflicts of interest, academic freedom, the intersection of research and policy, and universities’ credibility within climate conversations. It will also highlight student campaigning around these issues at the University of Cambridge and internationally, as well as relevant precedents for institutional action, and share opportunities for participants to get involved with the Fossil Free Research campaign.

About the organisers:

Beth Doherty is a student organiser with Fossil Free Research, currently studying Law. Zak Coleman is an alumnus of Jesus College, also an organiser with the Fossil Free Research campaign and former Cambridge Students’ Union President (Undergraduates). Seth Collins is a student organiser with Fossil Fuel Research, currently studying Medicine. Ilana Cohen is a student organiser with the Fossil Free Research and Fossil Fuel Divest Harvard campaigns.
